HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

OPTAMUS UNBSJ INC. began as a student club organized by part-time and mature full-time students who found they had different concerns and needs than traditional students while attending university.

It soon became apparent that part-time and mature students needed their own student government to represent their concerns, so the idea for the ORGANIZATION OF PART-TIME AND MATURE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS was born.  Application was made to the Board of Governors of the University of New Brunswick to obtain student government status for OPTAMUS which would be funded by part time student fees collected by the university business office.  The UNB Board of Governors gave their approval for part-time students to be represented by OPTAMUS.  The mature full-time students continue to be represented by the Student Representative Council (SRC) that receives their fees.  However, OPTAMUS continues to advocate  for mature students.

In 1991, the membership of OPTAMUS decided that the organization should be incorporated.  Incorporation was granted and the name changed to OPTAMUS UNBSJ INC.   The organization continues to represent part-time students on committees within the university community and to lobby governments regarding student issues.  As well, the organization plans social events in co-operation with the SRC to help ensure that all students at UNBSJ enjoy their academic career.

The funding of Scholarships and Bursaries, maintaining the office and lounge, as well as being the voice for part-time students on campus, is in keeping with mission statement to serve our members.
